SUSTAINABLE LIVING - WHY BOTHER?

In his speech "What is Education For?" American environmentalist David Orr suggests that education up till now has in many ways created a monster which is out of control.  He suggests that the only way forward in education is a focus on education of a certain kind, that is, education for sustainability.

My website aims to encourage the smallest steps towards this end.  In the absence of radical curriculum reform, there is a myriad of opportunities for the teaching of mindfulness and respect in the care of our planet in EVERY school setting.

The Sustainable Schools Program raises consciousness about our need to tread lightly and reinforces on a daily basis the imperatives of sustainable living.

It is hoped that this website will demonstrate some of the small steps we can all take and will help us all to become more GREEN

BE MINDFUL

BE RESPECTFUL

&

BE ALERT

Living sustainably starts with mindfulness and follows the principles of the 3 Rs

 REDUCE

REUSE &

RECYCLE

Take a look at the next few pages for some tips on how to live by the 3 Rs.  Checkout the links

to some sites offering useful information about sustainability and happy living lightly.

For some practical applications about what this might mean for your day to day living visit CERES

(Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies) at Brunswick.   Its ECO house is open to the public every Saturday.

Admission is free and you will get to view first hand what living sustainably can look like, smell like and feel like.
